OVs are great!

zeichenwutThis is about something I thought about for some time now this week and I can't understand it.
I heard some friends and fellow students saying they're too lazy to watch movies in english or read a book in english. Ok, that I can understand. I don't like learning vocabularies either. You don't really think I do learn my latin ones, do you? I hated to do this in school. And I've to admit that I've never been good in English or French. My marks have always been a C or D. That's not that good, is it? But the thing is you can't live in this world without knowing any English. It's not only necessary for the studies, you'll definitely need it for your job. I don't claim to understand every single word of an english movie or book, but I get the contents somehow. For me it's something like learning in a fun way. Yes, it may take some time to figure out the meaning of some words if they're not to be found in the dictionary, but it works. It's like getting a sense for the language. And sometimes the translations are so lousy, that you better stick to the OV. If you don't practice it after you've left school, it'll get rusty and you have to do all the work again.
I don't know when I started to read and watch in english after school, but after a while I didn't care. Well, it depends of the author, I guess. Some are truely difficult to read and I wouldn't read them voluntary in the OV. When you're going to watch a DVD, try the english version and if you're afraid that you don't understand a word, you can watch it with subtitels. It's a good way to practice your english.
So, please everybody, bite the bullet (even when it might be hard) and watch a movie in the OV or start reading an english novel. You'll see that after a while it's not so hard to understand. There are a lot more difficult languages than English. By the way we are swamped with english words. You can see them everywhere you look. Just watch the commercials on TV or in the streets. English is everywhere! You're not going to escape it, you know?
Please, don't be offended by my post. This is my opinion. I don't want to force you to anything you don't want to. I don't have the right to do so. Just give it try. It doesn't hurt.
